This section will focus on increasing proficiency in the four basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), with primary emphasis on oral proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic.
It is anticipated that those completing this course will achieve at least a degree of oral fluency equivalent to "intermediate high" on the scale devised by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
In accordance with the background of the students, instructors will use a variety of materials. |
1st Year Persian

The modern language of Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikestan, and ancient Persia is the language of Rumi, the great poet of the thirteen century , Firdowsi, the composer of Shâhnâmeh, (The Book of Kings), and Rubâiyât of Omar Khayyâm. An Indo-European language, related to English, French, German, and Russian, but written in an Arabic script.
This foundation class is suitable for academic, professional and vocational purposes. Its goal is to ensure that at the end of the program students:
1. Are accustomed to the Perso-Arabic script in the first two weeks of the class;
2. Have a thorough grounding of the language's structure;
3. Acquire vocabulary and grammatical rules organically;
4. Develop communication abilities for everyday usage. |
2nd Year Persian

Designed for students who are proficient in Persian listening and speaking skills and have an ability to read and write at a high elementary level.

Attendance and activity: This is an immersion program, a twenty four hour commitment. It means, in addition to daily attendance, you need to participate in all the activities with other students and your teachers such as eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together, going to group trips, watching Persian movies and occasionally playing games and singing together. The language spoken will be only Persian at all times. You are not allowed absences unless because of emergencies, such as illness, injury, death or illness in the family.
Upon return to class after an absence, you are responsible for any homework, written assignments, quizzes, etc., assigned on the day you were absent. If you know in advance that you have to be absent, please see your instructor. Please get the phone number of a classmate so that you can call him/her in the event that you are unsure of an assignment.
Course calendar/Schedule will be posted two weeks prior to the beginning if the classes.
Grades: Your grade will include +/- and will be computed as follows:
30% Quizzes
20% Written Final Exam
20% Oral Final Exam
30% Attendance, participation, and homework
